We rate the South Fork of the American River as the best California white water rafting river for first-time AND experienced rafters. As the premier dam-controlled river in California, the South Fork is a consistent Class III intermediate whitewater river, and has become our most popular vacation for individuals, families, and groups. It is available daily from April – September. The river offers a wide range of adventures with over 50 exciting rapids and calm, slower stretches where you can enjoy the beautiful canyon scenery and each other’s company. This is the perfect choice for an exciting and relaxing rafting California vacation for all.
The Middle Fork of the American River is a great choice for those individuals and groups who wish to experience the adventure of a remote wilderness river trip and enjoy the challenge of many exciting whitewater rapids. An adventuresome first-time rafter in good physical condition, as well as the more experienced intermediate rafter will love the Middle Fork. Isolated from civilization in the Auburn State Recreation Area, this dam controlled river offers spectacular scenery, crystal clear water, great rapids, excellent fishing, and the possibility of a side hike up a picturesque creek to a waterfall. A well-rounded rafting California vacation everyone will love!

THE BEST 1/2 DAY TRIP FOR KIDS! This 7 mile stretch of Class II whitewater is the perfect trip for families with younger kids. This trip can accommodate multiple generations with a minimum age of 4 years old and great for those less able bodied. With teenagers and adults we can typically add 1-2 Inflatable Kayaks to the trip for more of a challenge. The trip meets after lunch and upon gathering in Auburn and loading our shuttle vehicle we descend into the river canyon. This is a secluded section of river that is not offered by many. We like to enjoy playing on the river and a riverside snack (bring your own) on this trip and when available a side hike to a waterfall and, blackberry picking. Combo this with the South Fork American River for a camping and rafting family vacation!
One of our guides favorite rivers! This spring melt river system offer several Class IV and V runs! Perfect for the advanced rafter or adventurous beginners. A 2-4 day trip is the best way to experience this river. Meals are included and camping at our private campsite nestled in the tall pines of Tahoe National Forest. 1 day trips are also available and easily accessible from Sacramento and the Bay Area. Rafters ready for the North Yuba are in good physical condition and may need to have prior Class IV paddling experience. This spring white water rafting trip is a must do California river experience!
Plummeting out of the Desolation Valley basin near Lake Tahoe lies the free-flowing North Fork American River with some of California’s most exciting springtime technical rapids. From the moment we hit the river, the ride is challenging and exciting. The upper stretch of river has an average gradient drop of 50′ per mile through a steep and narrow granite canyon for spectacular rapids and great vistas! Turns are tight and technical; Chamberlain Falls is a thrilling drop! Rafters ready for the North Fork are in good physical condition and possess prior Class III paddling experience. This adrenaline-filled rafting california adventure isn’t one to miss!
Charging out of Sequoia National Park just east of Visalia lies the Kaweah River, one of America’s steepest rivers. In their classic guidebook California Whitewater, Jim Cassady and Fryar Calhoun describe the Kaweah as running “swift, clear, and free through some of the most exciting rapids in the state”. In other words, only your adrenaline rushes faster than these waters. The upper stretch of river has an average gradient drop of 70′ per mile. The torrential whitewater, beautiful scenery, and its short 3 1/2 hour drive from Southern California convinced us to add the Kaweah trips to our offerings.
The Tuolumne River is California’s Class IV+ premier white water river, rushing through one of the most spectacular canyons in the Sierra! Flowing from the high Sierra, the Tuolumne River creates the “Grand Canyon” of Yosemite as it spills into the Hetch Hetchy Valley behind the O’Shaughnessy Dam above our put-in at Meral’s Pool. Between water control projects, the Tuolumne races through the deep granite canyons, creating some of the most exciting rapids and breath-taking scenery of the entire Sierra! This “Wild and Scenic” river section flows into the Don Pedro Reservoir below take-out at Ward’s Ferry.
