Are you willing to reach for the maximum whitewater experience? Then look no further. California’s Cherry Creek/Upper Tuolumne rafting trips offer the ultimate Class V rafting adventure. Located near the northwest border of Yosemite National Park, Cherry Creek rafting trips are intense and demanding passenger participation experiences. These trips aren’t for the timid. Minimum age is 15-18 depending on water levels. Participants need to be in good physical condition and be ready to work it! With a phenomenally steep gradient averaging 110 feet per mile, the Cherry Creek/Upper Tuolumne is considered the most challenging (and fun) rafting trip in California, and the standard by which Class V runs are measured.

Successful Class V navigation depends on a coordinated guide and paddling team working in tandem. A training seminar and Class V paddler’s test are required for this thrill ride and are included at the beginning of each trip. Our experienced guides will coach you on the skills needed to negotiate Cherry Creek and the Upper Tuolumne before guiding you down this impressive section of the river. For those who participate, the rewards are great. You’ll have an exhilarating day of outdoor adventure like no other.

The Creek’s preeminent reputation makes it a popular choice for avid paddlers looking for a superlative single or multi-day Class V rafting adventure near Yosemite National Park. Your head guide will meet you the morning of your trip at our meeting spot, located about 15 miles east of Groveland, California on State Hwy 120, and about a 1-hour drive from Yosemite Valley. Participants will be provided with maps, detailed directions, and trip meeting times.

Our Cherry Creek-Upper Tuolumne Rafting trips are operated by a trusted associated rafting company. Cherry Creek / Upper Tuolumne Rafting trips meet in the parking lot of Sierra Mac River Trips Headquarters at 6am (unless otherwise specified) at 27890 Highway 120, 13 miles east of Groveland. Trips begin with shuttle into to put-in. A training seminar and Class V paddler’s test are required for this thrill ride and are included at the beginning of the trip. Upon completion, guests are ready to embark on a full day of truly thrilling Class V+ paddling. Trips are run with oar-paddle combination rafts for the ultimate in maneuverability. 

Cherry Creek / Upper Tuolumne River 1-Day Rafting Trip

Trips meet at 9:30am sharp at the Merced River Rafting meeting spot in Midpines, located 11 miles east of Mariposa, on CA State Hwy 140. After a 30-minute bus ride to put-in, guests are ready to embark on a full day of class IV+ paddling. The action starts immediately with an exciting series of hydraulics and rapids. The river picks up some volume as it merges with the South Fork, propelling rafts into legendary Ned’s Gulch rapid. About halfway downstream, we’ll eddy out to enjoy a delicious riverside lunch prepared by our guides and pause to take in the wonder of the Merced’s steep, oak-studded canyon. The afternoon offers a little time to catch your breath before entering into some of the wildest rapids of the day, climaxing with the double thrills of Split Rock and Corner Pocket. Guests usually arrive back at their vehicles between 4:30 and 5pm.

2-3 day Cherry Creek & Main Tuolumne Raft Trips

Cherry Creek/Upper Tuolumne trips can also be combined with the Main Tuolumne for 2- and 3-day trip options covering 27 miles of exquisite whitewater and canyon scenery: California’s best river trip.

Our Combination Trips begin with an intense day of rafting on Class V Cherry Creek/Upper Tuolumne and continue for an additional 1 or 2 days on the Main Tuolumne for a total of 27 miles of Class IV-V+ whitewater. These trips meet at 6am 13 miles east of Groveland and a little less than an hour’s drive from Yosemite Valley. A training seminar and Class V paddler’s test are required for this thrill ride and are included at the beginning of each trip. Upon completion, guests are ready to embark on 2-3 days of truly thrilling Class IV-V paddling. The action starts immediately with the intense rapids of Cherry Creek and the Upper Tuolumne, an almost non-stop series of steep drops and rapids. Trips are run with oar-paddle combination rafts for maximum maneuverability.

After tackling Cherry Creek and the Upper Tuolumne section on day 1, lunch is served, and guests continue their voyage downstream. We set up camp and spend the night under the stars at a remote beach where guides prepare a delicious dinner and dessert while you savor your day and trade rafting stories. On day two after a hot breakfast served in camp, the river’s gradient begins to lessen a bit, giving paddlers a little more time to enjoy the Class IV+ rapids of the Main Tuolumne. Sunderland’s Chute, Nemesis, Ram’s Head, and the famous Clavey Falls are just a few of the highlights of this section of the river. Trips conclude at Ward’s Ferry Bridge, and guests are shuttled back to their vehicles.

Do the entire 27 miles in 2 days, or better yet, linger a little. Our 3-day Combination Trips provide the ultimate escape and allow even more time on the river to explore side creeks and relax a the Tuolumne’s remote, secret swimming holes.
