Upper Klamath River rafting offers some of the best summer Class 4. Its the only “big water” California whitewater summer run and it has the longest rapids in the west. It is relatively uncrowded due to its location crossing the California/Oregon border.
The most memorable whitewater moments will be the long Class 4+ rapids of “Caldera” and “Hells Corner”. There is plenty of other Class 4 action too, on both 1 and 2 day raft trips. The 2 day trip includes remote camping in this high desert volcanic rock canyon.
A trip to this exciting Northern California river is definitely well worth it. The wild life is abundant with blue herons, bald & golden eagles, ospreys, Canada geese and deer. The caves along route are home to the protected Townsend’s Big Eared Bats. The area was inhabited by the Indians and some historic remains from old mines and ranches remain.
Strong swimming abilities are required for this river. In times of high water previous paddling experience may also be required, and definitely no non-swimmers.
There are many other recreation opportunities within the Klamath & Shasta National Forests and near Lake Shasta. Within a short distance of our Weed meeting location there is plentiful camping, accommodations & hot springs. The lively town of Ashland, Oregon (65 miles north) also offers many places to stay and the opportunity for some culture at its famed Shakespeare Festival.
For these Upper Klamath River rafting trips, airport pick-up can sometimes be arranged from Redding (frequent flights with United). Also from Weed with private or charter flights.
